Brockway: Affordable Lakefronts at Lake Tahoe

The ongoing demand for homes at Lake Tahoe is quickly reducing available inventory. The price for a lakefront home at Lake Tahoe is also moving beyond what most people can afford. However, the Brockway Springs Resort offers an affordable alternative if you want to buy a lakefront property at Lake Tahoe.

This half-mile, private, lakefront community includes the Brockway Springs Resort and condominiums, within a gated community of multi-million dollar, lakefront homes. Loren Sagen built most of the homes at Brockway Hot Springs, with a distinctively Eastern architectural style. He actually incorporated the natural hot springs into the homes and these springs are used to heat the year-round pool.  These magnificent homes rarely come on the market, but there are a few listings in the Brockway Springs Resort that I am excited to feature in this blog.

Outstanding Amenities

All of the recreational facilities at Brockway Springs Resort are available to both condominium owners and homeowners. The amenities include a year-round swimming pool, children's wading pool, tennis courts, fitness room, saunas, a club house, and a fishing and boating dock. The large deck is surrounded by views of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Condominium owners can enjoy on-site property management. Although the HOA does not actually rent out the properties, there are rental companies that can do this for you.

Brockway Hot Springs History

The history of this neighborhood traces back to the early days of Lake Tahoe. In the 1870’s investors bought the 63 acres that surrounded the natural mineral springs that boiled out the rock at water's edge. They built a 40’ x 60’ hotel with 5 two room cottages, called the “Warm Springs Hotel.” It also had a large bathhouse over the hot springs, and the property was used for spiritual healing and wellness.

Wellness was a booming industry at the turn of the 20th century. The site attracted visitors from the Bay Area, who traveled on a train and steamer, directly to the hotel. They even boasted having an auto road from Truckee and Reno.

The old Tahoe Tavern on the west shore, south of Tahoe City was built during the same period by Duane Bliss. He not only launched the steamer: SS Tahoe, but also developed a narrow gauge railway from Truckee to Tahoe City. This allowed for much tourism in Lake Tahoe and guests would enjoy horseback riding in the mountains and cruises around the lake.

Purchased by Frank “Brockway” Alverson and his wife, it became known as Brockway Hot Springs. Later, a casino was added and the Brockway Post Office was moved, so a swimming pool could be built. The close proximity to Crystal Bay casinos also attracted many guests in the 50's and 60's. During the 80's and 90's the area was transformed into one of Lake Tahoe's most exclusive communities.

Townhomes and Penthouses

Within the Brockway Resort, there are 78 elegant townhomes, tower condos and a few penthouses. All are adjacent to the lake and some offer stunning views. These units are privately owned and enjoy great rental activity. Many of the homes come with access to buoys and all owners can access the large pier. This resort also has a fully-equipped fitness facility, although it is also across the street from Lake Tahoe’s best hiking trails. Golf, shopping, restaurants, Crystal Bay and Kings Beach are all within walking distance.
